NIGHT SWEATS........


What exactly are the causes of “Night Sweats”?

During those occasions when you happen to wake up late at night or early morning drenched in wet sweat. No doubt the bedroom is not hot, you’re not sleeping under a blanket or any heavy covers. 


However, the ‘uncommon truth’ is there is no one thing that can be pinpointed or pinned down as the exact cause. According to ‘The  Annuals of Family  Medicine. Just about 1/3 of primary care patients reports night sweats over several months during the year. But most of the sufferers haven’t the slightest idea of the symptoms or the causes to share with their respective doctors, in order, to ascertain the proper treatment for the night sweats.


After that said, there have been a few common causes that have been uncovered and/or discovered.


The uncovered discovery revealed that the body uses sweat to reduce the core temperature when it spikes above a threshold known as ‘the thermoneutral zone. The Journal of American Board of Family Medicine shares that several factors increase the likelihood of night sweats such as:

Panic attacks-Sleep problems-fever-and  numbness

Inflammation and numbness in hands and feet

Even Anxiety and stress-and trouble breathing at night

Side effects of medications-including Selective Serotonin Inhibitors {SSRIs}commonly prescribed for depression.

In addition, hormones can also play a role in why night sweats. While men do not experience night sweats as often as women, they can sometimes by low testosterone levels, which is commonly called ‘male hypogonadism.


Also according to the Mayo Clinic, other potential causes include excessive alcohol and substance abuse usage. The Mayo Clinic further states it can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a type of cancer, especially if the night sweats occur regularly every night and seem to appear out of nowhere. Finally, some folks have begun to report night sweats as a symptom of COVID-19, a new variant that has recently popped up.


How To reduce Night Sweats

The best strategic approach is to treat whatever underlying condition that’s causing the night sweats. Also make a conscious effort to:

Sleep in breathable clothing and avoid heavy blankets

Avoid eating spicy foods before going to bed

Also your doctor may prescribe an alpha-adrenergic blocker per  Dr. Mold of The Journal of American Board Of Family Medicine
